Conference focuses on tribal taxation issues
Monday, August 25, 2003

The fifth annual Intertribal Tax Conference was held last week on the Mohegan Reservation in Connecticut.

Attendees discussed tax disputes in Indian Country, including attempts by states to tax Indian businesses. Fresh on the minds of many was the state of Rhode Island's raid of the Narragansett Tribe's smoke shop.

Narragansett chief sachem Matthew Thomas spoke at the conference and stressed cooperation between states and tribes on tax issues. "Don't let them take away your sovereignty," he said, The Providence Journal reported.

Robert N. Clinton, a law professor at Arizona State University, urged attendees to stay from the courts. He said the Supreme Court has created a "climate" negative to tribal rights.
