IHS director hears tribal health concerns
Monday, August 25, 2003

Dr. Charles Grim, the recently-confirmed director of the Indian Health Service, met with tribal leaders in South Dakota last week.

Grim, a Bush appointee, said IHS "is facing tight budgets the next four years," The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. He said the agency's budget is not keeping up with health care-related inflation.

IHS has a budget of about $3 billion. In recent years, the agency's largest increases have come not from the Bush or Clinton administration requests but from a special Congressional diabetes program. In 2004, $150 million will be available in grants to fight diabetes in Indian Country.
