Navajo man sentenced for double murder on reservation
Tuesday, August 26, 2003

Gregory Nakai, a member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced to seven life sentences for a carjacking and double murder on the reservation.

Nakai said alcohol led to the August 18, 2001, incident in which Jasbert Sam, 30, and David Begay, 47, were kidnapped and killed.

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. has called on the tribe to re-examine its blanket opposition to the death penalty in response to violent crimes on the reservation.
