Kan. tribe to sue Army Corps for highway project
Wednesday, August 27, 2003

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas plans to sue the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for approving a highway project that runs through historic wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University.

The tribe, Haskell students and alumni, and environmentalists oppose the highway extension. They say it will damage the wetlands, where burial grounds and other sites are located.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is undertaking the project but it needed federal approval because it impacts wetlands.
