Miami Nation to use land in Ill. for cemetery
Friday, August 29, 2003

The Miami Nation of Oklahoma will use 25 acres it recently purchased in Illinois to bury tribal ancestors, The Mattoon Journal Gazette reports.

The land was purchased for more than $40,000, according to an attorney for the tribe, who also said gaming is out of the question.

The land is located in the tribe's ancestral territory. The tribe in 2000 sued 15 private landowners, claming 2.5 million acres of land. The suit was dropped amid concerns that the tribe was using it as leverage for a casino.
