Sioux tribal members oppose speedy forest thinning
Friday, August 29, 2003

Sioux tribal members are protesting a forest thinning project underway in the Beaver Park Roadless Area in South Dakota.

The project is on the fast track due to legislation introduced by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D). The U.S. Forest Service doesn't have to comply with all environmental or historic preservation rules.

Tim Mentz, historic preservation officer for Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and the Defenders of the Black Hills, a grassroots organization, say the Forest Service hasn't consulted properly with tribes to ensure cultural sites are protected.
