Mont. group fights tobacco addiction and cancer
Friday, August 29, 2003

The Indian Health Board of Billings, Montana, is developing a program aimed at helping Native Americans quit tobacco use.

In Montana, and other Northern Plains states, tobacco use among Natives is especially high. The rate of deaths from cancer in Montana and Wyoming is 28.5 per 100,000, compared to 4.1 per 100,000 for Natives in the Southwest.

The Indian Health Board will draw a distinction between ceremonial use of tobacco and addiction.
