Lieberman says his Interior will uphold trust
Friday, July 25, 2003

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) criticized Secretary of Interior Gale Norton for her handling of her trust responsibilities in a speech to the Navajo Nation council.

"In a Joe Lieberman administration, my Interior Secretary won't try to argue her way out of trust responsibility. No one will be allowed to undermine that sacred, legal obligation that the United States government has," he said, The Gallup Independent reported.

Lieberman was briefed by Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. about the tribe's opposition to the energy bill pending in the Senate. Shirley and other tribes say certain provisions limit the Department of Interior's trust responsibilities.
