BIA issues decision on Wyandotte land in Kan.
Friday, July 25, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has issued a new decision on the status of land owned in trust by the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma.

The decision, in the form of a reconsideration, states that the tribe used settlement funds to purchase ancestral land known as the Shriner Tract in Kansas. It does not say the land, next to a Wyandotte cemetery, qualifies for gaming purposes.

The state of Kansas is challenging the decision in a new lawsuit, according to news accounts. The tribe has sought gaming there for at least a decade but has been not gained approval from the Department of Interior or the National Indian Gaming Commission.

The reconsideration was signed by acting assistant secretary Aurene Martin on June 12.
