Benedict: Growing up, there were no Indians in Conn.
Tuesday, September 2, 2003

Author and failed Congressional candidate Jeff Benedict says "there were no casinos and no Indians" in Connecticut when he was growing up.

In his 2000 book, "Without Reservation," Benedict claimed the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is not descended from an historic Indian tribe. While running for Congress as a Democrat, he said he would terminate the tribe.

Benedict has since written "No Bone Unturned," about the handling of the Kennewick Man although much of the book focuses on the work of a forensic anthropologist named Doug Owsley.

After losing the Democratic nomination last year, Benedict started the Connecticut Alliance Against Casino Expansion, a group opposed to the spread of Indian gaming.
