Eastern Cherokee official retains seat on council
Friday, September 5, 2003

Voters of the Eastern Band of Cherokees went to the polls on Thursday to elect new leaders.

Michell Hicks was elected principal chief, beating out Vice Chief Carroll "Peewee" Crowe. Larry Blythe, a council member, was elected vice chief over Teresa McCoy, another council member.

Voters re-elected Bob Blankenship to the tribal council. Blankenship is facing impeachment proceedings that are set to take place this month.

Former principal chief Leon Jones is also being impeached. He did not make it past the tribe's June primary.
