DOI report says national parks open to security breaches
Friday, September 5, 2003

A report from the Department of Interior's inspector general finds that national parks and monuments lack adequate security protections, The Washington Post reports.

"The National Park Service has failed to successfully adapt its mission and priorities to reflect its new security responsibilities and commitment to the enhanced protection of our nation's most treasured monuments and memorials from terrorism," The Post quotes the report as saying.

Investigators documented numerous security breaches at parks, including one guard who left his post to buy lunch. "Nothing I can do about that," his supervisor is quoted in the report as saying. "The guy has to eat."
