Conn. Democrats drop recognition reform bill for now
Monday, September 8, 2003

Connecticut's two senators say they won't push a bill to reform the federal recognition process because they lack the votes.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Democratic presidential candidate, and Sen. Christopher Dodd, also a Democrat, introduced a bill that would codify existing Bureau of Indian Affairs regulations. They want local communities to have more impact into a recognition decision.

Rep. Rob Simmons, a Republican, says he will move forward with his recognition-related legislation.
