Absentee votes determined Cherokee election
Monday, September 15, 2003

The winners in the Eastern Band of Cherokees' recent election can thank absentee voters.

Based on reservation votes, Carroll "Peewee" Crowe was beating Michell Hicks for the position of chief. But after the absentee votes were counted, Crowe lost to Hicks by just 92 votes.

"It's just not justifiable," Crowe told The Asheville Citizen Times.

Three council positions were also determined by absentee ballots. "It's just scary to have people who don't live here controlling the reservation," said one candidate who ended up losing.
