Group of B.C. First Nations sue over fish farms
Monday, September 15, 2003

A group of First Nations in British Columbia has filed suit against the provincial and federal governments, charging that private-run fish farms are destroying the environment and hurting fish runs.

The Tsawataineuk, Kwicksutaineuk, Namgis and Gwaraenuk First Nations depend on fish for subsistence. They say pesticides from the farms has hurt pink salmon, whose numbers have dwindled.

The private companies deny any wrongdoing and say numbers of some marine species have increased. Others say that fish farms can't be blamed for every environmental woe.
