Depiction of Indians in pageant disturbing to some
Monday, September 15, 2003

A Western pageant that takes place at the Pendleton Round-Up Rodeo in Oregon draws hundreds of Indian participants, mostly from the Umatilla Reservation.

But not everyone is happy with the way Indians are depicted in the Happy Canyon Night Show. They say it perpetuates stereotypes and is inaccurate.

The script for the show was rewritten with the help of tribal members, but nobody liked the new version. The original, which dates to 1916, is being used but parts about the mistreatment of tribes and some of the treatment they faced have been added.
