Alaska Supreme Court considers Native sovereignty
Tuesday, September 16, 2003

The Alaska Supreme Court on Monday heard arguments in a case challenging the extent of tribal sovereignty.

Alaska has 227 federally recognized tribes. But some in the state argue that their rights are limited.

In the case, Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP), an inter-tribal organization, is being sued by families who claim their children were hurt while participating in programs run by the association. AVCP is claiming it has sovereign immunity.
