New book delves into Mashantucket Pequot Tribe
Wednesday, September 17, 2003

A new book, Hitting the Jackpot: The Inside Story of the Richest Indian Tribe in History by Brett D. Fromson details the rise of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

According to The New London Day, the book includes previously unreported information about a racial split within the tribe. A researcher hired by former chairman Richard A. "Skip" Hayward commissioned a report on the issue but didn't allow it to be released because it concluded that dark-skinned members were being treated unfairly, the book says.

Jeff Benedict, author of a controversial book about the tribe, claims Fromson is unfairly marketing his book as the "first" of its kind. Fromson concludes that the tribe is legally a tribe but not culturally.
