Activist group grows beyond reservation borders
Wednesday, September 17, 2003

What started out two years ago as a group of Navajo tribal members looking to reform the Navajo Nation government has grown into a coalition of activist groups involved in everything from uranium mining in the Four Corners to sacred sites in California.

The Dine Bidziil Coalition consists of 37 organizations representing about 1,200 people on the reservation. The group's influence is growing and has attracted the attention of Navajo Nation politicians and state leaders.

Hazel James, one of the founders, says organizing is harder on the reservation due the remoteness of its communities and the lack of widespread telephone and Internet service.
