Conn. officials criticize Indian law center
Friday, September 19, 2003

Connecticut officials and politicians are criticizing a proposal to create an Indian law center at the University of Connecticut's School of Law.

Law school dean Nell Jessup Newton said the center is necessary since Indian issues have become a priority in the East. She is seeking federal funds and tribal support for the facility.

But others don't think public or tribal money should be used. State attorney general Richard Blumenthal said the center could be used to help tribes seeking federal recognition. He has used public money to fight tribes.
