Senate Democrats grill EPA nominee at hearing
Wednesday, September 24, 2003

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on Tuesday held a three-hour confirmation hearing for Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt (R), nominated to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

Senate Democrats used the hearing to blast the Bush administration's environmental policies. They said many were developed in secret and without public participation.

Leavitt said he would encourage collaboration as head of the EPA. He did not face direct criticism and Republicans and Democrats are sure he will be confirmed. Some Democrats plan to place a hold on his nomination on the Senate floor in order to gain more information about certain issues from the White House.
