School's museums still in repatriation process
Wednesday, September 24, 2003

Museums at Penn State University say they are working to repatriate remains and artifacts to tribes.

The Matson Museum of Anthropology has 28,000 artifacts including some human remains. None have been returned to tribes yet. "As a scientist there are amazing things we can learn from human remains, yet [Native American] communities think it is horrible," the museum's director told the college newspaper.

The school's Coal and Coke Heritage Center also has Native artifacts but none have been repatriated. The center says funding limitations hinder the process.
