Haskell officials question DOI's commitment on trust
Thursday, September 25, 2003

Haskell Indian Nations University regents on Wednesday questioned whether the Department of Interior is committed to funding the school's role in preserving Indian trust records.

DOI and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) want Haskell to train workers and students for a national Indian records repository being planned. But regents said they should be cautious, noting that funding could be cut off by bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. Others said that Haskell didn't have enough resources to do the job.

Assistant deputy secretary Abe Haspel told The Lawrence Journal World that he could guarantee $350,000 in funding for this year and next year. Beyond that, he said the White House would have to request money.

Haskell is hosting a three-day conference, which concludes today, on Indian records. Individual Indian Money (IIM) account holders were not invited.
