Inquest into death of Native man opens in B.C.

The inquest into the death of a Native man opened in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Monday.

Darryl Paquette died while in police custody. A pathologist testified that he had high levels of cocaine and codeine in his blood and suffered some non-life threatening injuries.

Native leaders want an investigation into the deaths. Since 1971, 19 Native people have died in police custody, according to a new report released last Friday.
