Wis. tribe makes largest land conservation deal
Thursday, October 2, 2003

The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians have secured the right to purchase 21,322 acres of forest and wetlands.

The land is within the boundaries of the tribe's original reservation. The tribe will now own 70% of the 154,000 acres of its ancestral territory, the chairman says.

The deal negotiated by the Nature Conservancy is the largest private land conservation purchase in state history.
