Coushatta Tribe spent $18M on lobbyists, lawyers
Monday, October 6, 2003

The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana spent $18 million on lobbyists and lawyers over a two-year period, a tribal council member said.

William Worfel told the Associated Press the money was spent negotiating a compact with the state, fighting the Jena Band of Choctaws, a landless tribe that wants to build a casino, and other tribal business. The tribe pays Republican lobbyist $500 an hour, according to published reports.

The spending was disclosed by an internal audit released by two council members who are questioning how Worfel and chairman Lovelin Poncho are using the tribe's money.
