Editorial: Agreement will help Whiteclay policing
Friday, October 10, 2003

A joint policing agreement between the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Oglala Sioux Tribe is a "good move for the tribe," The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial.

"The goal is better law enforcement, better protection," the paper says.

The paper says the agreement will also pave the way for the tribe to start policing in the border town of Whiteclay, Nebraska, since state law enforcement can't always do the job. "Tribal police, though, have headquarters in Pine Ridge - just two miles away," the paper says.

The state of Nebraska and the tribe are working on an agreement.
