'The Pequots are essentially living a lie'
Friday, October 17, 2003

The Pequots are essentially living a lie, and that is one of the fundamental problems facing these people," the author of a new book on the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut tells The Norwich Bulletin.

Brett Fromson wrote Hitting the Jackpot: The Inside Story of the Richest Indian Tribe in History. He talks of the tribe's rise to prominence and its internal divisions. Owners of the largest casino in the world, he says most of the membership is only interested in money.

"If the money spigot stops, the members will in large part drift away in different directions. There will be a core of people left, but a lot of people will decide to go elsewhere," a tribal member told him.
