First Nation leaders in Sask. elect new chief

Alphonse Bird was elected chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) on Thursday.

Bird is from the Canoe Lake Reserve and is former chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council, a coalition of 12 First Nations. He beat out incumbent Perry Bellegard with 55 percent of the vote.

First Nations leaders are praising his plans for economic development.
