Genetic material from Pimas used in diabetes study
Tuesday, October 21, 2003

Genetic material from more than 1,000 members of the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona will be used for an international diabetes project.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health are working with the Phoenix Indian Medical Center to identify the gene that causes type 2 diabetes. More than half of all Pima adults have the disease.

Amish, family groups in Utah, and people in China, France and England are also part of the study.
