Farmer rams tractor into car carrying tribe officials
Tuesday, October 21, 2003

A non-Indian farmer is being charged with assault after ramming his tractor into a car carrying a prosecutor and police officer for the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska.

Kim "Ken" Knecht was told not to harvest crops on land that is in dispute. During an October 7 altercation with prosecutor Thayne Glenn and officer Roberto Gorrin, he hit their car with his tractor.

The dispute is complicated by race and jurisdiction. Since Gorrin is Indian, the U.S. Attorney in Nebraska plans to bring charges against Knecht for assaulting Gorrin. But Glenn is not Indian so the federal government might not have jurisdiction.

The local county is waiting to see if it will file charges against Knecht for assaulting Glenn.
