Tuesday, October 21, 2003

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $446,000 grant to increase kidney donation rates among Native Americans in South Dakota.

The South Dakota Lions Eye Bank and the South Dakota State University of Nursing will use the grant for a three-year outreach and education program. They intend to target the Pine Ridge, Rosebud and Sisseton-Wahpeton reservations.

More than 1,000 Indians in need of kidney transplants but fewer than a dozen Indians are on the donation list.
