Anthropologist who work on land claims dies at 98

Verne Ray, a University of Washington anthropologist who worked on several land claim suits for Pacific Northwest tribes, died last month at the age of 98.

Ray represented 44 tribes in 53 cases before the Indian Claims Commission and other courts. According to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, he helped the tribes recover millions for lost or stolen land.

Ray also wrote books on several Pacific Northwest tribes.
