Narragansett Tribe's struggle inspires USET
Friday, October 24, 2003

The United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) passed resolutions supporting the Narragansett Tribe and New York tribes in their battles against state taxation.

Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas spoke to USET's annual meeting yesterday about the state's July 14 raid of the tribe's smoke shop. The state contends the tribe has to collect sales tax on the reservation.

The dispute is currently before a federal judge, who is expected to issue a decision later this month. R.I. Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) says he wants to meet with the tribe to discuss issues.
