Campbell to hold hearing on trust settlement bill
Friday, October 24, 2003

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing October 29 on a bill to settle the Indian trust fund case.

On Tuesday, Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), chairman of the committee, introduced the Indian Money Account Claim Satisfaction Act of 2003. It would resolve the account balances of Indian trust accounts with the aid of a task force and tribunal.

A Campbell aide said the bill is a starting point for discussions. The plaintiffs in the Cobell v. Norton say it needs fundamental changes before they will accept it.

Native American Rights Fund (NARF) executive director John Echohawk has been invited to testify at the hearing.
