Time running out to recognize all Code Talkers
Monday, October 27, 2003

Congressional attempts to recognize the Native soldiers who created unbreakable codes during World War II have stalled.

Members of at least 15 tribes used their language to help the United States win the war. But they are slowly dying. Only three of 12 Sioux Code Talkers are still alive.

Sens. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) have introduced a bill recognize all the Code Talkers. It is stuck in a Senate committee.

Congress has awarded Congressional silver and gold medals to the Navajo Code Talkers.
