Senate confirms Utah governor as head of EPA
Wednesday, October 29, 2003

The Senate voted 88 to 8 to confirm Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt (R) as head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Several Democrats held up Leavitt over objections to Bush administration policy. Most dropped their opposition after receiving concessions from the White House on environmental-related issues.

Leavitt has promoted his cooperation with tribes and states on clean air issues affecting Grand Canyon and national parks in the West. He has not been as kind to the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe in his own state. He opposes the tribe's bid to store nuclear waste on its reservation.
