Mohawk leaders to negotiate new agreements
Thursday, October 30, 2003

The leaders of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation on Wednesday withdrew support of a land, tax and gaming agreement the previous tribal administration signed with New York Gov. George Pataki (R).

The tribal chiefs still plan to negotiate with the state on the those three issues. But they rejected the prior agreement as "a political mistake.

The deal was meant to settle the tribe's land claim for $100 million and some property. It would impose state taxes on businesses on the reservation and authorize Class III gaming on the reservation and in the Catskills region, where the tribe has gained approval for an off-reservation casino.
