Conn. court orders tribal member to pay taxes
Monday, November 3, 2003

A superior court judge in Connecticut has ordered a tribal member to pay state income taxes.

Jo-Ann Dark Eyes Isaac is a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. She claims an exemption on income she earned while working on land within the tribe's settlement area.

The land wasn't taken into trust until 1998 and it wasn't purchased with tribal settlement funds. So the judge said it wasn't Indian Country.

Isaac plans to appeal Friday's decision, her lawyer said.
