Apache chairman talks of change within culture
Wednesday, November 5, 2003

Alonzo Chalepah, chairman of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, spoke to students at Indiana University Northwest on Tuesday.

Chalepah talked about the enormous cultural changes the tribe has experienced since signing a treaty with the U.S. in 1867. He said the people at the time didn't understand the reservation or allotment system but have been able to survive despite hardship.

Chalepah said Apache youth face similar challenges. The tribe tries to expose them to culture, language and ceremonies, he said.
