Rep. Frank Ballance (D-N.C.) said he would consider sponsoring a bill to recognize the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe of North Carolina.

The tribe has a petition pending before the Bureau of Indian Affairs. A spokesperson said the application will be competed sometime next year.

The Eastern Cherokee Tribe is the only tribe in the state with federal recognition. The Lumbee Tribe's status is pending before Congress.
