BIA students in Mont. help with turtle research
Thursday, November 6, 2003

Students at the alternative Bureau of Indian Affairs high school on the Flathead Reservation in Montana have document the mortality rate of the western painted turtle population.

Working with a University of Montana researcher and their science teacher at Two Eagle River School, the students catalog the number of dead turtles found along a stretch of highway. The turtles die while searching for water sources, they have found.

The research is being reviewed by the state Department of Transportation and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to assist in the development of highways with turtle-friendly culvert crossings.
