Head Start shakeup stirs protest at Pine Ridge
Thursday, November 13, 2003

Members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota are demanding the firing of four federal Head Start program employees.

This summer, the Head Start program terminated 150 people for not meeting various federal government requirements. According to President John Yellow Bird Steele, the Department of Education threatened to cut off federal funds for the program.

But the tribal members say the way the program is being managed by the federal employees isn't working. They want local people to run the Head Start.
