Few tribes participate in national symbol registry
Friday, November 14, 2003

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is asking more tribes to participate in a national registry aimed at protecting tribal symbols, insignia and logos.

The registry was created through legislation sponsored by Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.). He saw that the Zia Pueblo's sacred sun sign was being used throughout New Mexico, including on the state flag. The tribe objected to the uses and sought legal protections.

But so far, not many tribes have registered. Several Arizona tribes contacted by The Arizona Republic saw the need for the program but didn't feel an urgent need to participate.
