Supreme Court refuses challenges to gaming pact
Tuesday, November 18, 2003

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to the state of New York's appeal in a gaming compact case.

Gambling opponents won a decision in New York Supreme Court saying that the governor cannot enter into an agreement without legislative approval. The state challenged this decision, saying that it shouldn't be allowed because o tribal sovereign immunity.

The compact was with the St. Regis / Akwesasne Mohawk Tribe, which did not participate in the lawsuit. The gambling opponents now say they will press arguments that gaming is illegal in the state.
