Chickasaw Nation top political donor in Okla.
Monday, November 24, 2003

The Chickasaw Nation has given the most political donations of any Oklahoma tribe.

The tribe and its affiliates have given more than $480,000 since 1996 to Oklahoma politicians, according to The Oklahoman. "We contribute to candidates for political office because we want them to know that Indians and Indian tribes are involved in the political process," Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby told the paper.

The Choctaw Nation and its affiliates ranked second, according to the paper, with $280,000 in donations. "We just feel that it's important that we help our friends that have helped us so we have a voice there when it's needed," Assistant Chief Mike Bailey told the paper.

In total, Oklahoma tribes have given $1.2 million since 1996 to politicians in the state, whether for state office of national office. Most of the money, by a five to one margin, went to Democrats.
