Menominee Nation makes repatriation a priority
Monday, December 1, 2003

The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin is using the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act to recover tribal ancestors and other artifacts.

In early November, the tribe recovered two sets of remains from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. One turned out to be Waukanuka, a Menominee leader who lived in the 1800s.

So far, the tribe has reburied 69 ancestors. The tribe's historic preservation officer says there at least 100 more to repatriate while the repatriation officer said there could be thousands.
