S.D. jury selected for Janklow manslaughter trial
Tuesday, December 2, 2003

A jury was selected on Monday for the felony manslaughter trial of Rep. Bill Janklow, former governor of South Dakota.

According to an early Associated Press report, two people who appeared to be Native American were excused because they said they had already made up their mind about Janklow. Helen Gilbert, an employee for the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, thought he was guilty, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. Others who knew Janklow or supported him were also excused. In total, 28 were dismissed.

Janklow is advancing a medical defense for the August 16 crash that killed motorcyclist Randy Scott. He says he was suffering from a diabetic condition at the time of the accident and his senses were down.

Janklow was speeding and ran a stop sign when he hit and killed Scott. Prosecutors say there is no way to explain why he ran the stop sign.

The trial is expected to last all week.
