Town leader says Pequot tribes violated trust
Wednesday, December 10, 2003

The leader of a Connecticut town accused two Pequot tribes of violating the town's trust and said all discussions with tribes should remain open to the public.

North Stonington first selectman Nicholas Mullane said the town was in talks with the Mashantucket Tribal Nation on water rights. But he said the tribe met secretly with the state to increase its authority. That authority was eventually rescinded due to objection from local leaders and the state attorney general.

Mullane and the town have opposed the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation. The tribe was granted recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs but the decision is being appealed by local leaders and the state.
