Mont. school district creating Indian curriculum
Friday, December 12, 2003

A member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana is helping the Havre Public School district develop a curriculum that will teach students about Indian history, culture and government.

Avis Chenoweth wants to make sure Indian studies are integrated into all parts of the curriculum, not treated as a separate unit. "All children will benefit from this, not just Native American children," she tells The Havre Daily News.

The Montana Legislature in 1999 passed the "Indian Education for All" act to require public schools to ensure Indians are included in their curricula.
